Embrace Coloured Lights in the Garden for an Elegant Paradise

Garden designers often view coloured lights as garish, with clients sometimes insisting only on warm or cool white light. However, Coloured lighting can be exciting, and if used in the correct way, can make a huge difference in the overall appearance of a garden at night.

A fantastically effective way to use Colour is to ‘wall wash’, or to up-light a feature. These are well-known techniques that are worth experimenting with. There are many other ways to use coloured lights differently, to bring your garden to life.

An effective method is to enhance the natural surroundings with similar colours. A great example of this is up-lighting trees or plants. Use a green dichroic lens or coloured bulb to enhance their natural, lush appearance. It will create vibrant green foliage rather than what can be a washed out green, which can be the case when using white light. Lighting a specific feature in this high impact way can also help draw the focus away from other areas of the garden. Warm white on the left and Green on the Right:

Lively purples and reds are great to emphasize the heads of flowers, berries and lavender bushes. and warmth is easily achieved by using a warming amber tone.

Bring ornaments to life with colour

One of my favourite pictures is of the lion statue (inset), uplit with an orange lens which really makes him stand out in what appears to be his natural colour.

Coloured lights are widely available by using Dichroic coloured lenses. These are available from Lumena at less than £6.00 each. Coloured PAR38 Floodlights bulbs are ideal for up-lighting medium to large trees.
