In March 2022 Lumena were asked via a commercial electrical installer to present specs. on different high-output Solar Street Lights. The lights were for a local hospital. Lumena have two professional solar lighting ranges. Theses are the Pro Solar Range, which includes their revolutionary range of solar bollard lights, and the VIAMAX Range. This range comprises of commercial solar streetlights and PIR solar lights. All solar ranges are designed in the UK climate.
The location for the intended lights was NHS Kettering General Hospital. They had asked the commercial contractor to provide a general solution for a lighting refurbishment around the perimeter of the hospital car park. The lights would continue an installation run, at every Pelican crossing leading up to various departments including A&E.
NHS Kettering General were very keen to keep running costs, installation time and upheaval to the hospital grounds to a minimum.
Having considered the time and cost of mains installation, they found that a commercial solar lighting option would be the best option. Pelican crossing poles were already in place for compatible light fittings to fix onto.
With that in mind, they needed high output solar street lights to provide safety and security at night. They also needed to illuminate in a downwards direction. This streetlight also needed a decent light output at around 3m high, and last through dark hours in UK weather throughout the year. A PIR motion sensor and brightness settings were a bonus. As long as there was light when people or cars were accessing different areas of the hospital, this was the main factor.
The light that was selected was the HiWay Max – 40w PIR Motion Sensor Solar Street Light. The HiWay Max uses a high capacity LiFePO4 12000mAh battery for ultimate charge retention. There is also a large, integrated mono-crystalline solar panel for fast charging.
Of the two modes available, the one selected produces 30% constant light from dusk, then increases to a selected brightness when the PIR is triggered by movement. The light then reduces back to 30% after approx. 20 seconds of no motion detection. This auto function retains charge very efficiently, especially paired with its in-built dimming cycle. The other mode is constant ‘on’ for a selected time (2hr, 4hr, 6hr, 8hr, 10hr or 12hr) and selected brightness level of (60%, 80% or 100%).
The versatile mounting brackets were teamed with post adaptors meant installation of the solar street lights was more straightforward than wiring 240v mains streetlights.
This particular install also utilised bespoke powder coated adaptors – a first for Lumena which is now standard option.
Importantly, the client also needed commercial lighting products that were available quickly. Other lighting solutions were put forward. These included mains streetlights from much larger brand names. However, no supplier could deliver the lights within an acceptable lead time for the client.
Lumena hold good stock levels across the ranges of their products. They also offer a next working day UK delivery on most products if ordered by 3pm. This is dependant on quantity and availability.
